Established in 1993, Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl Nisga’a Institute is a fully accredited university-college built to serve the people – Nisga’a and non-Nisga’a – who live in northwestern British Columbia. To safeguard and protect Nisga’a language and culture, Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl Nisga’a Institute’s core curricula is based on Ayuukhl Nisga’a – the ancient code of laws.

Post-secondary education is critical. In a knowledge-based society, skilled managers and thinkers will be needed to run the myriad facets of Nisga’a Government – while simultaneously safeguarding Nisga’a cultural values.

Right from the start, the Nisga’a people have supported Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl Nisga’a Institute. NEC (Nisga’a Economic Enterprises) initially contributed $100,000 and later made a $250,000 donation to the Nisga’a Endowment Fund. This sum was generously matched by the provincial government and the University of Northern British Columbia.

Proud of its early accomplishments, Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl Nisga’a Institute recognizes that its ability to fulfill its goals depends on a secure funding base. Government alone cannot finance the innovative projects needed for the Nisga’a people. WWNI must look beyond government grants to ensure that Nisga’a talent reaches its potential. It is critical that Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl Nisga’a Institute build an independent funding base.

Key to WWNI’s ongoing success is the strength of its endowment fund. Since startup in 1994, the endowment has grown to more than $1 million. This growth is largely due to the generosity of our donors who recognize the need for flexibility and increased financial independence. Our goal is to build WWNI’s endowment to $4 million by the turn of the century.

We are asking you to invest with us to develop the resources we will need to govern ourselves: new knowledge and a skilled workforce. Most of all, your investment will prepare Nisga’a students – the new leaders of Nisga’a Government – for the very real challenges they will face in making history as full participants in Canada.

Ways of Giving

Donations to WWNI, as a registered charity, generate tax credits which may be applied against a maximum of 75 per cent of net taxable income and can be carried forward for up to five years. It is expected that increasingly, donations will be directed to the WWNI Foundation.
Gifts of property such as securities, real estate, equipment, collections and life insurance as well as bequests and other planned gifts may provide donors with even greater tax advantages. These need to be discussed with the donor’s financial adviser.
WWNI is now working to establish a Foundation in order to raise funds for capital projects, student scholarships and bursaries, faculty and staff development and other priorities to strengthen academic programs and technologies.
