The publishing of the Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl Nisga’a first edition of the Nisga’a Language Dictionary is an important milestone in Nisga’a publication. WWNI wanted to ensure that this project was Nisga’a led so left its principal development to Verna Williams (WWN’s senior language instructor). Verna was assisted by Dianna Rai (WWNI’s Nisga’a language curriculum developer). In addition to interviewing numerous elders, Verna and Dianna often referred to School District #92 (Nisga’a) language publications and personnel for assistance and support. This publiction was developed to support Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl Nisga’a Institute’s university level language courses. The Nisga’a language, like many other First Nations languages, is in danger of extinction. With the publication of this dictionary, we hope that it will support efforts to revive and preserve the Nisga’a Language for future generations.
