Ms. Lorene Plante, Ksim Lax Miigunt
Ms. Plante is a founding member of the Wilp Wilxo’oskwhl Nisga’a Institute Board appointed by Gitlaxt’aamiks Village Government. Ms. Plante is currently the Vice-Chair and serves on the Committee of Sages.
Ms. Plante is a hereditary matriarch in the Laxgibuu (Wolf Tribe) of the Nisga’a Nation in the House of Duuk. She understands Nisga’a language fluently and is very knowledgeable in Nisga’a culture and traditions.
Ms. Plante has been a member of several committees and boards, including the Diocese of Caledonia, Nisga’a Economic Enterprises Incorporated, Siit’ax Corporation (includes five companies), Vice Chair of the First Nations Council at Northwest Community College, Chairperson on the BC Tribal Forum, Board member on Northwest Community Futures 16/37, Northwest Community College Board, and Founding member and Director on Tribal Resources Investment Corporation. She has served as a Board member and Chair of an Assembly of First Nations committee dedicated to gathering information regarding the operation of day schools and residential schools across Canada. The findings were published in a National Indian Brotherhood (now known as the Assembly of First Nations) report entitled Tradition and Education: Toward a Vision of our Future (1988).
Ms. Plante is sole owner and proprietor of three successful businesses: Lorene’s Lava Lodge, Nass Valley Gifts, and Lorene’s Catering. She has four children: a daughter working as Department Head, Gitlaxt’aamiks Village Government, a son who is a master carver, a son who is a Film maker/Documentarian and Editor, and a daughter working with New Relationship Trust.
